The TouchPad was on sale in Britain for just over a month and failed to make an impression on the market which has been dominated by the Apple iPad. HP is to refund hundreds of pounds each to customers who bought its failed TouchPad tablet at full price. The compensation programme means buyers who paid full price for their TouchPad before August 23 will have effectively acquired it at the fire-sale price.

For the bottom-of-the-range, 16GB, Wi-Fi only HP TouchPad, buyers will receive the difference between whatever they paid and £89, which is the heavily discounted rate at which HP sold off remaining stocks once it decided to scrap the product. When it appeared in British shops just over a month earlier, the recommended price was £399. Similar compensation will be offered on more expensive models, and to buyers of the Pre3 Smartphone, which was also culled as part of a major shift by HP away from consumer electronics.

Dragons’ Den serial entrepreneur Peter Jones CBE has sold one of his telecoms businesses, Wireless Logic, to ECI Partners, the UK mid-market private equity firm, and management for £38m. This is the third telecoms business that the star of Dragons’ Den has sold in the last year. In the last twelve months alone he has sold various telecoms interests receiving almost £100 million in the process.

Wireless Logic is the UK’s leading independent Machine 2 Machine (M2M) communications specialist, with 3,600 customers and over 500,000 SIMS under management. ECI is one of the longest established private equity groups in the UK and has total committed capital of over £1.1billion.

The BBC has released an updated version of the iPlayer designed for televisions in a move that it’s hoped will broaden access to the catch-up service to those viewers who may be a bit less technologically minded. It is available from today on the PlayStation 3 games console, and is being adapted for an array of set-top boxes and internet-capable televisions. Many such devices were already able to access iPlayer, but the presentation was inconsistent and it could be frustrating to navigate.

It is thought that the new version will be easier to navigate and the service has proved highly successful on computers and Smartphone’s, but executives are keen for it to colonise its “natural home”, the living room. However there is one set top box that will not have access and that is Sky which remains a closed platform. The satellite broadcaster’s approach is in contrast to its rivals Virgin Media and BT, who are both collaborating with the BBC to adapt the new iPlayer for their subscribers.

Many people report that they have trouble connecting to free Wi-Fi outlets in hotels and other places so if you are having a problem what is the best advice? Firstly you should always ensure that your laptop or netbook is has the latest driver so you should find the most up to date version and instructions on how to install it on your computer manufacturer’s website.

Signal strength is often an issue because although it may be showing, with a couple of signal bars, some operating systems such as Windows 7 may have trouble establishing a connection. Get as close to the router as you can and try again. Once a working link has been made it should connect again further away in weaker signal areas. If that doesn’t work go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre and click Wireless Network Connection. Click Wireless Network Properties and the Connection tab and make sure that only Connect automatically is checked. Some laptops will not connect to some wifi signals, so perhaps buy an external USB wifi stick and take that with you, it can be that an alternative wifi receiver will resolve this kind of problem. If it still won’t connect then your security software and firewall may be to blame; on an open Wi-Fi system we would not advocate disabling it.

The hype surrounding the Motorola Atrix has not died down since the mobile first debuted. One reason that this phone is a popular choice is its WebTop feature, which is distinctive to the Motorola Atrix and especially appeals to tech-savvy consumers. Fortunately, getting such a popular and high-tech phone does not have to be a costly venture. Several Motorola Atrix deals are available.

One form these deals may take is refurbishment. A refurbished Motorola Atrix phone is not brand new but is still in good condition. If someone returned the phone for any reason, the company may refurbish it before reselling at a discount. There is no need to sacrifice quality in order to save money, as a refurbished model is still high-functioning and can be bought from reputable dealers.

Other deals on the Motorola Atrix take the form of tariffs. Sometimes it is possible to get these types of deals by being selective about the calling, messaging, and data plan purchased for the device. For example, with a 2-year contract, Amazon Wireless will sell the Motorola Atrix 4G smart phone for AT&T Wireless at an approximate price of £30. This offer also includes free shipping.

Amazon.com also sells Motorola Atrix phones at a discount directly on its website. The phone will cost more if it is purchased along with a contract. However, it is possible to buy only the phone, without any sort of calling, messaging, or data contract, at a discounted price. Just be sure to pay close attention to the exact item description.

Amazon’s Kindle may have a leadership position right now in electronic reading devices and digital books, but this is a hot market and is getter more competitive. Toronto-based Kobo is turning a new page in its history, announcing a whopping $50 million investment from Fidelity and existing investors. Today at the London Book Fair, Canadian based e-reader giant Kobo announced that they will be tailoring their Kobo eBook Store towards selected European markets.

The foray by Kobo into the European market is not just launching a new eBook store, but also localized versions of its Kobo Wireless e-reader.

Choice is all very well, but when there’s too much of it problems such as headaches are often the result as we are left in a state of paralysis over which way to jump in case we miss the best deal. This is especially the case with broadband providers these days, with everyone from Orange Home Broadband, Tiscali Broadband and TalkTalk Broadband to BT Total Broadband and Virgin Media Broadband and even Tesco Broadband stampeding into the market like so many buffalos, all in fierce competition for customers.

The important point to remember is why you want broadband at all, and what you’ll use it for. The level of service required by a corporate user will be very different to that wanted by a normal domestic user, for example. The business user will want the fastest speeds available and a high level of technical support. But even with medium users, the needs will vary, with occasional senders of email requiring less than enthusiastic social network users and live chat addicts.

Take into account the length of contract whether you’re looking for mobile broadband, business broadband or any of the domestic broadband deals. Monthly rolling contracts are often a better idea than 12 month or 18 month ones if you may have to terminate and don’t want to pay for the lost months.

Many broadband providers also have monthly usage caps embedded in their contracts, whereby if you shoot over a certain level you’ll be charged, so this also will depend on your expected level of usage.

Broadband is now fairly ubiquitous, as there’s a limit to what you can do with a dial-up connection, and in business it is indispensable. The type of cutting-edge software that is now deployed across the internet for everything from casino-style gambling to social networking assumes you have broadband to run the applications. Dial-up still works, but is extremely limited in terms of speed and functionality, and is a bit like using a manual typewriter and carbon paper when you have word processing available.

Broadband, as well as keeping you connected 24 hours a day, dispenses with the need for a telephone line. Many companies such as Virgin Media Broadband and Sky Broadband offer 3-in-one packages of telephone, broadband and satellite TV provided down the same connection, which can save you money when you consider that telephone calls are often free nationally with such an arrangement.

Tiscali Broadband, TalkTalk Broadband, Think Broadband, BT Total Broadband, PlusNet Broadband and many more broadband providers now crowd this very competitive market, and it pays to shop around for broadband deals by using broadband comparison websites to find the best ones on offer. This is good advice whether you’re taking out a broadband contract for the first time or are due for renewal on an existing one.

When choosing broadband providers, you may be better off choosing a monthly rolling contract rather than a fixed one of 12 or 18 months, because if you end it early you will often have to pay for the whole term.

Given the number of Smartphone’s currently on the market and the increased load on mobile phone networks, a lot of areas now have slow mobile data. Crucial to any high-end mobile phones is a speedy network, without which users may not enjoy the full benefits of their handset. Things like streaming music and video while on the go can become increasingly difficult particularly in areas that are very slow.
