Founded in the USA in 2003, Android is a mobile phone operating system that was taken over by internet giant Google in 2005. Google’s online app store, Android Market, sells upwards of 250,000 Android apps, which are fuelling the company’s phenomenal success as it strives to become a brand leader.

Android sat nav apps are just some of the diverse applications and, competitively, Android sat nav apps are now offered free on Android smartphones in the UK. There are a range of Android sat nav apps, including the free Google Maps Navigation, but also many others that are worth paying for.

Highly rated Android sat nav apps include Co-Pilot Live, which ranks favourably with standalone GPS systems and even offers the facility to receive live traffic updates and petrol prices. With great usability, it comes highly recommended. Other Android sat nav apps worth exploring are AndNav2; TeleNav, for the occasional user, which works on a subscription basis; or the highly innovative BreadCrumbz, which even works within the confines of a building, allowing the user to plot every step.

Some smartphones even come with Android sat nav apps as their integral feature and USP, such as the nuvifone A50, produced by Garmin-Asus. Other sat nav apps include Sygic, which fully maps the UK and Ireland and provides real time updates of traffic alongside lane guidance features and warnings of safety cameras.

Here at TechLounge we’re big fans of sat nav, particularly it’s mystical ability to prevent what might otherwise be relationship ending arguments at bay! If you’ve ever sat fuming beside your other half after they accused you of not knowing left from right, or put up with one too many “we’re not stopping to ask, it’s just down here” then you probably know what we mean.

So with Christmas on the horizon and many couples hiring a vehicle as they travel to see friends and family here’s an idea for car hire companies: free sat nav for everyone. OK it may cut into profits a little but with most of the big names hiking prices over the holiday season they can afford it, and you simply can’t buy the kind of goodwill that comes from saving a marriage! Come on car hire chiefs, open your wallets and make the world a slightly less angry place this Christmas!

Mio Technology has announced a new GPS unit sporting the widely popular 1980’s TV series Knight Rider. Knight Rider was a hit back in the 80’s and propelled the career of David Hasselhoff, who was a crime fighter helped by a Pontiac Trans Am, fully modified to do an array wonderful stuff and could drive itself called K.I.T.T.

The ever popular series has been repeated on most TV networks since its release, and has spawned a movie version which was released earlier this year and a revamped series set to hit US TV’s later this year.

The Mio Knight Rider GPS unit has licensed the official voice of K.I.T.T. from the 80’s TV series, William Daniels, who faithfully directs you to your destination that even The Hoff would be proud of. There is a full colour, touch sensitive widescreen within a sleek black case featuring red LED’s reminiscent of the Pontiac’s front grill on K.I.T.T. The green arrow marker has been replaced with a top view of the black Pontiac Trans Am, which pinpoints your position exactly.

Full specifications haven’t been released yet, but expect the Knight Rider GPS to be similar to the Mio Moov range only with the welcoming message “Hello Michael, where do you want to go today?” which rumours suggest that you can change to your name.

No word on a release date, but we imagine it will only be a couple of months and is set to be priced around the $270 mark. No news on whether it will be available in the UK yet.

With its rich and colorful 2.8” screen we welcome the HTC Diamond after much anticipation.

The elegant body has clearly not been rushed in the design process, and is as nice to touch as it is easy to use. The body has faceted edges which really add to the phones stunning looks.

Ok it’s going to pick scratches up as soon as it leaves the box and you will spend the first few days having to wipe finger prints off, when impressing you’re friends who own iPhones.

What Orange calls Touchflo 3D is pretty much a slightly hacked version of the Apple cover flow. The main difference being that the album covers moves more or less from behind each other as opposed to side to side.

Orange is claiming a wonderful online experience with the HTC Diamond through full interaction with Youtube, Google and Wikipedia and its ultra-fast internet connectivity is set to almost rival a Home PC broadband connection.

The 3.2 Mega pixel camera has an auto focus and the Touch Diamond has a healthy amount of storage, 4GB of internal storage to be exact.

If you have ever left your sat nav at home don’t worry, the HTC Diamond has GPS so can easily guide you to your destination as efficiently as a dedicated sat nav system. Could this be the phone that shows up the iPhone?

We have had a request from one of our readers to find a car stereo that not only has a CD player and FM tuner, but is all singing, all dancing, with a HDD and the ability to play Mp3 files. We thought we would find one that has still not been released yet in Europe so that you can see what is possible to produce and adapt to a car.

Here we have the Kenwood HDM-555 which is a complete in-car navigation system installed with a 20GB hard disk drive, [Smá:t] Navi. Kenwood is renowned to be at the leading edge of in car technology. The HDM-555 has been designed to be easily operated and to be compatible with the iPod giving you access to all your stored Mp3’s.

The main feature of this device is the screen, or should we say the touch screen TV monitor with independent hard keys to make it very easy to use. The best thing is the HDD which will store all of your Mp3’s, WMA’s, videos and GPS maps. You can also play your CD’s and DVD’s from disc, including DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW discs. This is a complete in car entertainment system.

One piece of software that it has been released with in Japan is the Windows Automotive platform which allows the user in the vehicle to connect through the internet to a home server, allowing you to check for telephone messages at home or control electronic systems programmed into your home network.

Here is a UK designed and manufactured Satellite Navigation system that is also a speed camera and traffic black spot alert system. It retails out at just under £600 but it’s worth every penny in our opinion here at Techlounge.

The Road Angel has state of the art touch screen and a full integrated QWERTY keyboard that makes it so easy to tap in the postcode, or street name into the device. One thing that we all find annoying is that with some Sat Nav systems it takes so long to set the route up before you set off. With the Road Angel it uses predictor text so it is even easier.

The maps are displayed in either 2D or 3D depending what your preference is, and set up is easy. The colour screen makes it very clear where you need to be going and there are also voice prompts that can be set up to let you know to turn at your preferred warning time. The most useful thing about the Road Angel is that it will check your speed when you are coming up to speed cameras and traffic black spots. The updates are done via USB and you have to subscribe for the monthly downloads.

Wow, how cool is this Tomtom Go700. If you have Bluetooth on your mobile phone, the TomTom Go700 will act as a hands free kit. But once you’ve had a few 15 minute conversations it starts eating away at the battery so we would advise getting the in car charger for it. This unit is amazing, we took it out on a test run and in a town we didn’t know. We felt a bit peckish so we tapped in restaurants and McDonalds and before you knew it we were at the Golden Arches. The ladies voice is a bit irritating but this can soon be sorted with the official add-ons of John Cleese’s voice to cheer you up on your dull motorway drive.

The unit has a mini 2.5GB hard disk drive in, which is more useful than a memory card as they get lost easily. The touch screen is great and the clarity is astonishing for such a little screen. It takes the TomTom a few minutes to get GPS signal but apart from that, then it’s fine. The only problem we have encountered is that in some cars they have a UV protection layer on the windscreen, but sometimes they have a small hole in the bottom left hand corner which is UV free and allows the system to work fine.
