Science fiction game enthusiasts will be delighted to hear that the creator of hit game Minecraft has revealed the first details of his follow-up project. The new game is provisionally titled 0x10c and is a space themed game set in the distant future. Unlike Minecraft the new game is believed to have a monthly fee to take part in multiplayer games. Close to five-and-a-half million copies of Minecraft have been sold despite it lacking a third-party publisher and marketing campaign.

The creator Markus “Notch” Persson has said that the storyline involved a group of humans who were accidentally put into extended deep sleep in 1988, and woke up more than 281 trillion years later. The universe is described as being on “the brink of extinction” and users take part in space battles, looting, trading and planet mining operations. Sounds interesting don’t you think?

The new Sony PlayStation Vita is due to hit the streets on February 22nd and early reports suggest that the new hand held gaming device is going to be a hit. Portable gaming was thought to be a thing of the past, but this is far from the truth when you consider how easy it now is to download decent games to the Smartphone for the next to nothing. This being so you might be forgiven asking what future does a dedicated handheld gaming console offer?

From Sony the future looks great with the introduction of the Playstation Vita which is the most powerful and versatile handheld console the market has yet seen. Coming with a 5 inch OLED touch screen, rear touch panel, dual analogue sticks, in-built gyroscopes for motion control, front and rear facing cameras, GPS, wi-fi, that is the answer from, Sony! It can be said that the Vita has all you need and although many believe that the dedicated handheld consoles may be a thing of the past, not if Sony has anything to do with it.

Nintendo’s profits are falling in the face of competition from Smartphones and rival consoles. Nintendo has been around for longer than you think. It began in 1889 as a playing card company, so it would seem unthinkable that it risks of being swept away by more nimble competitors.

The challenge for Nintendo is finding a way to compete against the rise of Smartphone gaming. The company has some great titles but why pay for a separate games console and pay £30 for a game when you can have fun with a title for under a £1 on the device you carry in your pocket every day? The Nintendo Wii can take a lot of credit for the boom in casual gaming but its innovative control system, however many think that there are now better systems by both Sony’s PlayStation Move and Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect.

Many people think that is would be wise to follow the path taken by Sega more than a decade ago and get out of the console business entirely. This would allow it to focus on making its undeniably brilliant catalogue of games available on other platforms. We shall see how the coming year shapes up for Nintendo.

A staggering figure of more than a billion apps have been downloaded for the first time in a single week, this according to analytics firm Flurry who said 1.2 billion apps were downloaded in the last week of December. No doubt the numbers were influenced by many users who received new devices for Christmas and firms offered discounted apps over the holiday period. The US was responsible for nearly half of the figures accounting for 509 million, followed by China with 99 million.

The UK alone was responsible for 81 million which easily surpassed Canada with 41 million, Germany and France who each downloaded 40 million. Looking forward to 2012, Flurry expects breaking the one billion download barrier per week will become more commonplace. Unsurprisingly, Christmas proved a boom time for device makers. Flurry estimated that nearly seven million Android devices and iPhone were activated on Christmas Day. Apple does not disclose such figures but Google confirmed that more than 3.7 million Android devices were activated over the Christmas weekend.

Is this the way that entertainment will be going in the future as the Xbox’s latest update seeks to make the video games console a single hub for all sorts of home entertainment, whether this is films, TV or gaming, the Xbox with Kinect should be all you need. Controlled by gesture, voice or the traditional controller, this is a gadget that feels increasingly futuristic, even though the hardware itself is not new. Wave your hand to scroll through a list of tracks, games, movies or options, or even just talk to your television.

There is maybe a snag though, because Sky customers in particular need a real justification to watch their existing service via the new Xbox app, although it offers two significant improvements. Firstly, the interface for Sky on Xbox is the required, marked improvement, making it far easier to find on demand films, and offering the same, familiar channel guide for live Sky TV. Because it’s delivered online, it means that, say, a family could log on wherever they find an Xbox, or a student could carry their family Sky package with them to university. In an age where the web is of growing importance, apps such as this mark a sea-change, and expand Sky’s reach beyond the satellite dish.

In an effort to boost sluggish sales of its 3DS console, Nintendo are cutting the price to £180 from the figure of around £230, in anticipation many retailers have already implemented the price reduction in an effort to increase their sales.
In a statement made this morning, the video games giant said “Nintendo of Europe will be reducing the European trade price of Nintendo 3DS to retailers by around a third from 12th August 2011, as part of a global trade price reduction initiative. The ultimate price to consumers is, of course, determined by retailers, however we look forward to consumers benefiting from much lower retail prices very soon.”

For people who are already buying the product, Nintendo will be offering an “Ambassador Programme” to consumers who purchased the 3DS before 12 August. The programme will enable these Nintendo 3DS owners to download 10 NES games and 10 Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games for free.

Recent tech news has been dominated by the revelations coming from Sony that their Playstation had been hacked into and customer information stolen. In a statement the head of communications for Europe, Nick Caplin stated: “We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network”.

This problem highlights the fact that you should be extra vigilant when entering personal information into any site. As an example only organisations such as banks and insurance companies need to know your real date of birth, this and your name is probably unique to you and you should not let people misuse this. It is really surprising that Sony did not encrypt account information, this entire situation should never have happened, it’s the equivalent of leaving a bank vault door open! A company as big as Sony with a database of millions, should not have taken these risks.

According to schoolteacher union NASUWT school children arrive at school armed with the very latest gadgets including, mobile phones, iPods, hand hold games consoles and even iPads to class, but without the basic tools of a pen or pencil. The problem has become so grave that schools now have to arrange to sign agreements with parents that make it the parents’ responsibility that their children turn up with textbooks and pens for school each day.

Young people aspire to have the MacBook and other expensive equipment but teachers are concerned that the children seem to have all their priorities skewed, automatically reaching for their MP3 players and so on, but not for the writing equipment. With the influence of electronic equipment on people, industrialists are worried that schoolchildren should be able to pick up a pen and construct a sentence, which is correct in terms of grammar and spelling, without resorting to an electronic spellchecking device which will probably give them an incorrect, American version anyway.

The anticipation will soon be over for those waiting to see the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play which is due to be released here in the UK on March 31st and Playstation geeks will be looking to see just how it performs. The Xperia Play is a touch screen Android Smartphone with slide out Playstation gaming controls. It features a 1GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera, and microSD card slot, 3G, Wifi and GPS.

The Sony Ericsson has a number of features which are pre-installed which have been developed for the Xperia controls including: Tetris, Crash Bandicoot, FIFA 10, The Sims 3, Bruce Lee Dragon Warriors and Star Battalion. There will also be around 50 games available from launch available through the Playstation suite service, these are made up of some classic Playstation One games and other games developed for the device. All UK networks will be offering the Sony Ericsson and as expected it will also be available from a number of game stores as well as online. We have no indication of the price of this at present.
