Dell has announced the specs for its super-slim laptop the Adamo XPS, which has been given the title of the world’s thinnest laptop (but for how long is anyone’s guess). The Dell Adamo XPS has a 13.4 inch LED High-Definition screen and a striking, yet practical design.

To open the Adamo XPS, you must first open the latch by stroking your finger along the lids heat sensitive strip; the laptop will not open if you do not do this. Once opened the laptops unique folding mechanism comes into play that tilts the keyboard up toward the user (see picture below) and puts the screen to the optimum viewing position.

The Adamo XPS will come with a 1.4GHz Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor and 4GB of DDR3 memory and have a choice of 120GB, 250GB or 500GB solid state hard drives. Another cool feature of the Adamo XPS is that it has a full size keyboard with redesigned fonts bringing an extra bit of style and look to the device.

Connections as you would expect are pretty sparse with two USB sockets (one each side), a display port and headphone and mic sockets, but this should be enough for most users. The laptop is also Wi-Fi ready, so you can connect to the internet at home or on the move.

Dell hasn’t announced a release date or price yet, but states that it should be available before Christmas.

The present credit crunch means that everyone is searching for new ways to save money, what better way than to start than by cutting those all important energy bills with the help of some energy saving gadgets.

There are many gadgets out there to help save on energy bills. Home energy monitors can help you find out which appliances are likely to consume the most electricity.

P3international.com has come up with the Kill-A-WATT device which is a monitor that can display the amount of energy used by electronic devices around the home. The Kill-A-WATT retails at around £13 and can plug into any outlet. Then it is just a simple case of plugging in an appliance or gadget into the device to see its power consumption in kilowatts per hour. (Utilities use this standard measurement of electricity)

Another useful energy saving gadget is Black and Decker’s Power monitor which retails at around £62.00 and can display just how much electricity you are using throughout the entire house. The system makes use of a wireless transmitter that attaches to your electricity meter and links to a hand held device that then displays usage in KWH or pounds. This is particularly useful if you need to track changes in electricity consumption when appliances are turned on. The system also has the functionality of displaying monthly bills and how much electricity you have used up to a certain date when you enter the rate into the monitor

Samsung’s new Blu-ray player the BD-P4600 is being touted as the slimmest Blu-ray player in the world (see pictures below), but not only that, it is also the world’s first wall mountable Blu-ray player.

Its stunning design with its curved body banishes the standard square box design and is in keeping with Samsung’s recent LCD TV range. The BD-P4600 comes in gloss black with grey edge or gloss back with red edge, but oddly enough the latter is unfortunately only available in the US. The Samsung BD-P4600 is also one of the first Blu-ray players to play Divx HD movies.

As stated above, the Samsung BD-P4600 can be wall mounted to fit in with your flatscreen TV or alternatively, you can mount it on the supplied stand, which props the player up at a 25 degree angle; both options look equally as good.

The Samsung BD-P4600 is capable of showing Full HD 1080p images and High Definition sound for the ultimate movie experience. The player can also play Divx, MP3 and Jpeg files as well as up scaling DVDs to 1080p.

The BD-P4600 Blu-ray player also features two USB ports to connect flash memory drives to and an Ethernet connection to connect to the internet and take advantage of BD-Live, which enables access to online content such as special features and various other web based content.

The Samsung BD-P4600 Blu-ray player is available now from various retailers for around £200.

A new way of video game distribution has been unveiled at the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco. Called OnLive, the new system aims to let users’ stream on-demand video games straight to their PC’s and TV’s using a new distribution network.

The new OnLive service could provide competition for the high-end games consoles such as the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. Talking about the new network, company founder Steve Perlman said: “OnLive is the most powerful game system in the world”.

Adding that, “No high-end hardware, no upgrades, no endless downloads, no discs, no recalls, no obsolescence. With OnLive, your video game experience is always state-of-the-art”.

The company has developed data compression technology; this allows the games to be powered from remote servers, as opposed to being on games consoles. Users can download the games instantly to their home computers or through the OnLive Micro Console, which allows game to be played on any TV; all that is required is a high speed internet connection.

OnLive has already signed up nine games developers including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, THQ and 2k Games, which will give users access to the latest and most advanced solo and multiplayer games.

The OnLive game distribution service is due for release this winter and only time will tell if it will change the way we play games in the future.

BSkyB has announced that 90,000 of its Sky+ HD customers will have their set top boxes replaced due to a manufacturer fault. BSkyB said that the fault is with HD boxes that are manufactured by Pace and involves faulty internal cabling, but it is not a safety risk.

About one in ten HD customers will be affected by the fault, which affects the first batch of HD boxes made by Pace; the model numbers are: 9F3001, 9F3002, 9F3003 and 9F3004. Anyone with one of the model numbers shown should contact Sky for a free replacement box; Sky has also said that anyone affected by the fault will be given 3 months free subscription to Sky’s HD pack.

The replacement program is expected to take around three months and in a statement Sky said: “The assembly flaw does not involve a faulty component, such as a hard drive, or a software problem”.

The broadcaster added that: “Importantly, Pace has confirmed that the assembly flaw does not pose a safety risk”.

Sky also said that the HD boxes can still be used as usual, until a Sky engineer comes and replaces it.

Phillips has announced a new TV that could revolutionise the way we watch films in the future. The TV, called the Phillips Cinema has a super widescreen display with a 21:9 aspect ratio; this is the first ever cinema proportioned LCD TV.

Combining a massive 56 inch screen and Phillips Ambilight technology, the Phillips Cinema 21:9 is the first TV to deliver a genuine cinematic viewing experience. Televisions that have an aspect ratio of 16:9 either distort the picture to get it to display on the full screen or display the film in a letterbox format.

Phillips also say that the Cinema 21:9 will use advanced formatting technology, so that standard 16:9 images from TV broadcasts and games consoles can be adapted to fill the 21:9 screen with no loss of quality.

Phillips will be releasing more detailed specifications and pricing at the end of February; the Cinema 21:9 is expected to be available this spring.

Sony will release their new accessory for the Playstation 3, Play TV on September the 19th in the UK. Play TV is a Freeview box that connects to your Playstation 3 and allows you to watch and record your favourite TV programs onto the PS3’s hard drive.

Play TV will also allow you to watch recorded programs on your PSP wherever you are, via a Wi-Fi connection. The box will connect to your PS3 through a USB slot, which also powers the device and means you do not need an external power source.

Play TV has dual TV tuners so you can record one channel whilst watching another and you can also play games or Blu-ray discs while recording as well. The usual EPG and program guides are also included so you can view TV listings and set recordings up to a week in advance.

As mentioned above, you can also access recorded content through your PSP via the Remote Play application, that turns your PS3 on through the internet and streams recorded programs straight to your PSP.

The amount of programs you can record will depend on the size of your PS3’s hard drive, with an hour of recording time taking up around 1GB of space. Available on the 19th September, Play TV will retail for around £69.99.
