Xbox 360’s Faults and Problems

xbox 360 fault The ground breaking new console that the world has been waiting for, and due to be released in the UK in just over a week could be a big disappointment to avid gamers. Reports are coming in from the USA, where the console was released the other week, that the Xbox 360’s are experiencing some faults such as overheating, and crashing in the middle of a game, the screen going black all of a sudden, errors such as E74 and E79 appearing on the screen, games refusing to play or the system freezing needing a reboot.

There seems to be no specific fault with the Xbox 360 unlike the PS2 when it hit Europe with a power supply problem. Microsoft apparently are trying to calm the situation by saying that they have only had a few isolated incidents, but the Xbox forums tell a different tale. Could it be that the console has been rushed to get it released?

Maybe it would be best to wait for the second generation Xbox 360, or even stick with the Playstation 3. Here’s a interesting fact for you, more than 90 million PlayStation 2 consoles have been sold worldwide since the PS2’s debut in 2000, compared with some 25 million Microsoft Xboxes sold since 2001. So it goes to show that the Playstation will always be the gamers choice.

    I saw a survey which found that 2% of Xbox 360s just didn’t work and 5% overheated. I’m not sure I have the information completely correct but I remember the numbers were very small. Some people are putting this down to the delivery companies as some of the cases were damaged upon arrival. I think the big fuss about them not working has been blown out of proportion, and after all, the people shouting the loudest are the ones with broken 360s. I know if I get mine and it works I won’t be on forums telling everyone about it - I’ll be busy playing away!
    I’m definitely getting one anyway (hopefully next friday!).

    I agree with you Chris… I suppose there will always be some faulty units out of the 1000’s that they are selling and quite rightly the ones with faulty ones will be complaining while all the rest are happily playing away. I hope mine is ok when it arrives.

    The problems seem to be due to idiots who have the systems set up on carpet.What happens is the power supply heats the carpet and the auto shut off in the power supply goes off.The power supply is a monster and has to be capable of running a top end system but it has no cooling fan.So depending on what you are doing in the game at the time when the auto shut off happens you will see different errors.The simple solution is have your console and power supply in a suitable place and not on your carpet.Most game console instruction manuals will tell you to do that.

    Just to add to my last reply, My local Electronic Boutique sold over 150 xbox 360’s and has had no returns on the core system or the deluxe system.You also have to understand that over here in the USA there are a lot of dummies who are not tech savy and a lot of houses have terrible electrical systems that are already overloaded.I’m a big Xbox fan but i’m still waiting to see all 3 next gen systems before i buy.So far non seem to be Next gen to me ,I’m looking for a huge leap in game play and not some fancy graphic upgrades in my next gen games.

    The leap in gameplay you want can only come from game developers, not hardware manufacturers. New consoles really only offer more power and occassionally more features, not necessarily ‘better’ games. Think about the differences between the NES and the Xbox 360 - they’re pretty much the same thing, only one has a lot more power than the other.

    So many people have their game consoles on the carpet in front of their TV. It’s got to be doing the systems harm especially with the overheating problem. The game manufacturers need to devise a stand for consoles to sit on.

    surely its like running your laptop on your bed its great and nice and cosy (warm for you) but the laptop is killing its self. But at hte end of the day you’d of thought they might of consided somepeople will run the system on the carpet, so lets test it on the carpet and see what happens.

    having worked in games retail for while now (3yrs) it my experience that with any new console release and for that matter ANY kind of new ANYTHING you will have a number of units that didn’t quite “come up to scratch” but still slip through the net. If microsoft had only made 100,000 units and 50 of them were faulty everyone would call it a “great achievment” You will probably find all the reported faults have come from ps2 owners who have bought a 360 as something to play untill the ps3 is released…….sour grapes coz it’s a beast :))

    I received my Xbox 360 on friday, switched it on - three red lights. (General Hardware Fail) So I contacted my supplier (ToysRus) and was told to contact Microsoft.

    So far I have called them Microsoft numerous times and they have promised to call me back with 24 hours - no calls, so I have been sending them multiple emails - no replies.

    It seems that Microsoft is ignoring me, or they do have a bigger problem.

    Has any one else had the same failure?

    I have had a probolem with my xbox 360 with the three red lights on two occasions but on both it as spontaneously resolved, but I would still like an explanation from microsoft as my console is not on carpet etc. However I like Nick have failed to get a response despite the promise of phone calls within 24hours and numerous e-mails. hey must be very very busy with this one!!! When it works tho its great!

    i have the xbox 360 but got probs with it. firstly it played great for about 1 hr superb machine then it all went pear shaped. it froze now it wont do anything. microsoft havnt contacted me as promised or returned emails so good luck to anyone who wants this type of service,and i hope you have got the tissues in for christmas as a lot of children will be dissapointed when they unwrap it and cant play it.

    Thanks for the comments, I have xbox but was about to get the 360 for Christmas and expect a few teething problems, but if that is Microsofts attitude and customer service, you can keep the experience, I think I might just go PS3.
    as I went xbox after ps1, think I will go back. Sorry MS your attitude just lost you a customer. see ebay for my old xbox

    here i am again its been 5 days and now my 360 has been taken away with another promised within 72 hours. ill post again when it comes. hopefully it will work this time round.
    it will be interesting to see if the playstation 3 has the same probs i guess only time will tell eh

    I’ve ordered a 360 for January, but I’ve heard reports of faulty parts. I’m just wondering if the shipment by then will be fixed. Most of my local stores says that’s when they’ll get in. I’m not sure if I should wait longer or stick with my January hold. Any advice?

    Stick with it Aaron - I got mine on release day and I’ve had no problems. I guess it’s just like any new product, some units will have problems but most won’t.

    my xbox 360 will not turn on 3 red light thats all i get, ruined christmas but its up to the retailers to get it sorted not the manufactors so dont let them fog you of and tell you to contact microsoft it up to them by law.

    Just got my 360 premium & I have the same problem (out of the box!)… three red lights. I tried all the hokus pokus positioning of the power supply & all but that didn’t work (FYI, even if that does work for you, that does not mean it is normal & should be accepted). Anyway, called MS, waited about 3 minutes on hold, they are sending for my unit & promise a quick turn around. I think they have heard enough Bitchin from us that they are just replacing what is wrong (don’t believe the media hype, they know what is wrong). Anyway, just wanted to give everyone my experience.

    I have got some very frustrating problems with my xbox 360. It has black and white squares flashing at varying intensities on the screen. It is now unplayable. I have contacted microsoft via email on their website.

    Mine worked ok for a while then it’s just those 3 annoying lights… E-mailed Microsoft today. I just hope it will be within the warentee, i bought it off eBay, even though it was brand new and sealed. And no I didn’t waste money on inflated prices, I was ‘lucky’ enough to find one on sale for the RRP.

    The Truth is the console was a little rushed and it has faults within’ it’s early days, I think the 360 is an amazing console but i will be waiting before buying myself one, at least untill they confirm the exact problems. I’m sure anyone who bought the first playstation console in it’s early days can tell you that after about 6 months they just stopped working (i did the same) luckly i rang sony and they where very quick in replacing it. I think if you have bought an xbox 360 and it is failing they should replace them, They would have a lot of bad reports otherwise. All said and done i’m not a lover of either the x box or ps i’ll be saving my pennies and buying ‘em both (now all i have to do is do loads of overtime in work!)

    Had my 360 for a week. 3 red lights out of nowhere. MS arranging for shipment. Wonderful phone tech though. He didn’t speak a lick of english. Everything scripted from the get go. I even found the troubleshooting doc on the net they read from. I knew more than he did. As pro MS as I am, their QA sucks. They should have never released this thing at Christmas. So many dissappointed people. It’s ashame MS didn’t quality test this thing like they do their OS (sarchasm).

    i bought mine on ebay and it came after christmas which really annoyed me, BUT NOW THE THING WONT TURN ON. forget the 3 red lights. i get noting. it is like i dont have it turned on at all. and now i am going mad. and what is with the 2 pin plug? who the hell has a 2 pin socket these days.

    Well, I’ve got to give credit where credit is due. My xbox 360 was picked up on 1/5 and I got a replacement back from MS on 1/9. The replacement is working well but only time will tell. I hope others are getting theirs back as quickly as I did.

    Bought one on 2nd Jan - optical drive failed after 90 minutes. Sent it back, new one lasted a week - three red lights.

    Wish I had never bought the damn thing. Had enough.

    hi guys,

    Guess what, i bot mine from ebay, this was a japanese version and since being in Dubai, something was better than nothing. Paid approx 690$ for premium sealed pack with dvd remote and PDZ free with it. ANyway, worked for almost a week, before freezing and then on restart the dreaded 3 red blinking lights (which is worse than BSOD). After emailing MS, got a scripted response of calling support in USA. I had specified that i’m nowhere near US to be able to call and try to find a closer location, now they gv me UK’s support number. How can they help out on a Japanese version? Will try few more emails then hv no other option but to call their support in UK.

    I’ve read that the xb0×360 revision 2 is much better and not suffering any problems. So hope u guys wait a little and get the 2nd revision. This crappy first edition is S**T, thnx to cheap chinese factories.

    when i had a psp i found out it was an illigal import from china and i brought it from gravity games in preston. when i come to trade it in nobody would accept it because it was chinese but i got told to ring up sony and tell them there was a fault so i did and they drove down to my house took my old one of me and give me a brand new english one so sak thats what you should try but i don’t know weather micrisoft will do the same though but gud luck

    After reading about the many overheating problems with the xbox360, I have taken it upon myself to protect mine. I keep my xbox360 in my room under my T.V. and in a corner both on a stand; so at times it can become a bit stuffy in my room. I have purchased two USB personal fans(the long ones); i run the fans out of the USB ports around the side of my xbox pointing them into the back for extra air cooling. I also run a big fan in front of my xbox if i plan on playing it for the whole day. Its also i good idea to have your xbox360 in a clean dust free place.

    I have a xbox 360 it sucks. I really feel that the system will be the next dreamcast. My dad has had more trouble with his. The screen is frozen. The red lights are at full rage on the power menu(on button). He has had lots of trouble out of (MS) getting a new one.

    yeah I got my 360 on launch day the 22nd everything was great until last night i turned on the box and got sound but no picture and All my cords were legite.then came 4 red lights then it went to three with the upper right not lit. So i called microsoft he said do this and that,any way i got it working fine but the manufactures warranty runs out feb 19 so I tell the guy look what if its fine now and on the 20 of feb it doesnt work again.Id be ass out because i didnt send it in.So I sais send me a box to ship it back ,so thry are..My only prob is with all the horror stories I hear about u.p.s and microsoft sending back screwed up consoles will i be doing more harm sending it in or take my chances with it in my hand any advice would be appreciated???

    Hey, had my 360 for 4 x months easter sunday 3 x red lights and freezing all the time, seem to have a faulty 360, i called microsoft its been collect the next day and they have emailed me back straight away.
    seems to be a good service so far but i will keep you all posted.
    It seems that it only started when i put in the new battle field modern combat game, have you guys had any probs with this game?

    brought console april 5th by april 18th my xbox had scratched 5 project gotham racing disc and 1 ghost recon, microsoft said they wouldnt have it back if it didnt scratch an audio cd. took it back to shop they gave me new console its quieter loading than my previous xbox and it hasnt scratched a cd yet. microsoft are a complete of waste of time they take your money then they dont want to help you they said i must have moved console while it was on, i replied im not stupid i read your manual havent touched it and it still scratches discs, they basically called me a liar, wish i never purchased it now

    I got my 360 in feb it worked for 1 day before dieing on me halfway though
    call of duty 2 i rebooted and apresto! the three red light blinking away at me
    so i decided to call the support center directly instead of returning the console to amazon.to my amazment i got though straight away told them the problem ran though all the checks unpluging everything and so on still no joy! they promised a box would arrive in the next few days!. the next day i returned from work to find the box had arrived! could not belive it had come so quick! anyway off went my 360 to the repair center two days later i get a phone call from microsoft in america to my amazment! they could not apologise enough! and promised my 360 would be with me as soon as repairs were finished at their uk repair center.on the forth day my 360 was back! new power pack included! since then touch wood! ive had no problems
    at all and is still running fine!three months on!

    curt, you have to reset the console to 60hz to play dead or alive 4, it sez so on a small piece of paper which should be included with the game. SHOULD’VE HAD A DAM GREAT STICKER ON THE GAME CASE INSTEAD!!!!!!!

    I waited to buy and Xbox 360 because of the problems that I have been hearing about and purchased one in late April. It died completely in Mid-May. I DO NOT have it on the carpet - in fact, I have in on its own shelf on my entertainment center with 8 inches on each side of the system and 10 inches above it. It locked up one day while playing Battlefield, but then I turned it off and back on again and it worked fine. Then, about 3 days later it locked up while playing Call of Duty 2 and now IT DOESN’T EVEN GIVE ME A PICTURE WHEN I TURN IT ON! No red lights, no red light on the power supply, no recognizing the controller, NOTHING. (and yes, the display cable IS connected and the power supply is plugged into a wall outlet directly). I must say I am extremely surprised because the Xbox 1 I have had since launch still works flawlessly! If you get one, BUY THE WARRANTY - I am glad that I did!!! I am used to poor QC from Sony, but Microsoft?!!?!

    Got mine for the kids as a christmas present right before Christmas (yeah that was hell waiting on line in the middle of the night). Today, literally 6 months later I’ve got the 3 red lights and nothing else. The damn thing won’t even boot. Microsoft tech support tells me I’ve got bad hardware, but I’m out of warranty (after all it is a crappy 3 month warranty). Fortunately, it’s fixable for ONLY $139. But hey, shipping is included. Isn’t that generous of them. The absolute nerve of this company to make a piece of garbage and expect consumers to pay for the fix only 6 months after. I’m done with them. For my own satisfaction, I’m filing complaints with every consumer advocate company and agency that I can find. This is crap!

    Hey dave, mine did the same exact thing. it was a day away from 6 months. the worst thing is I put mine up in the closet waiting for a new game to come out. I had a buddy loan me call of duty and broke it out to play. the damn thing froze up and I called microsoft to see what they can do. they told me the same thing. for around 100 they’ll fix it. I’ve got hundreds of games for the old xbox and would have ended up with hundreds for the 360 but if this is how microsoft treats it customers I’ll just stick with a sony. for the record I’m going to sue microsoft and I’m going to my lawyer to put down 1000 towards the bill of court costs. Yes, thats not a type 1000.00. I could go buy a new 360 but I’m not going to give microsft another penny of my hard earned money. I’d rather my scum sucking lawyer get 3 times that and get microsoft to admit they were wrong. if you have a shitty system like I do then sue them. they should have recalled all of them any damn how. if anyone wants to email me to find out more please feel free to.     if i hear some ppl here i ask myself whats going on with you.
    some points are really against any logic, when i hear how can get something expensive like my 360 break? or some ppl are so concerned about a product which is sooooo expensive, but they dont care at all how long the warranty is, if i buy something expensive like that the 360, warranty is one of the first things i take care about, of course its not nice to have only a 3 months warranty, and i dont know why ms doesnt make it 30 $ more expensive and force us to have a longer warranty, but ppl have to understand that you cant complain about those things, especially expensive things can break because more technical stuff is in it and if i pay for my warranty i dont want that any careless freak get his console fixed for free, if u buy stuff which cost a lot it doesnt mean it doesnt break for a certain time and it would be unfair t fix it for free when other ppl actually take care and buy an extended warranty. and if u dont care you have to pay the price, if u bring your vcr to repair you pay more than 50 $ what do you expect if u ship it in (3 ways)and let it repair. and its frustrating but some ppl let it sound like everyone has problems with it and even if u have red lights could be so many diff things which can be the reason what causes the issue…
    ppl should complain about the law that allows it to make such a short warranty > in europe the ppl have at least 1 year warranty in some countries even 2 years!

    and really folks: so many ppl are talking about i never buy ms products again and will buy the ps 3 > its always when new products come out that they are very expensive and have some bugs……

    I cant believe this ….i have searched for a couple of hours on the Ring of Death topic and there is simply far too many users out there with issues.

    Whats my story…check this: March 06 purchased new premium console from Game, two days later & im seeing red lights. Game replaces the machine and of we go again. September 06..the day Test Drive came out…the red lights are back. Game replaces the machine no worries. Its now the end of October and once again im seeing red. So this is going to be console 4 in in 8 months.

    The 360 is not like other console or even the ps3 because it wants to be a media center and all that…well it cant handle games so where ms thinks it gets off that the everyday consumer is going to rely on this poor product for their tv needs i dont know. so my advice too anyone considering having this thing in their home is this:

    BE PREPARED TO TAKE IT BACK AND HAVE IT REPLACED TIME AND TIME AGAIN….DO NOT KEEP THE SAME MACHINE FOR MORE THAN THE WARRANTY PERIOD OR EXPECT TO PAY.

    AND REMEMBER THAT IT NEEDS SPACE TO BREATHE….DOES MS KNOW WHO THE TARGET AUDIENCE IS….BECAUSE WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE GOING THROUGH ALL THIS.

    hi evryone just read the comments list & felt i had to add my own sorry tale bought 360 premium march 06 within 1 month it was over heating & scratching discs ( not sitting on carpet ) - took back to my retailer & they exchanged evrything while suggesting not to stand console on its side ( thought it was designed to do that ) retailer said they had several returns for same fault. all ok for a couple of months, then the big FREEZE decided it was time to contact ms AND THIS IS WHERE THE FUN REALLY STARTS
    CALL1 wait time approx 40 mins ms bozo tells me try stuff - no change
    CALL 2 wait time ” 30 mins ” ” ” ” unit & hard drive u/s return them — approx 2 wks later console lands back BUT NO HARD DRIVE
    CALL 3 wait time approx 30 mins ( incl. being cut off twice ) tell ms bozo no hard drive received - am told that h/d are sent separatly & will receive it in couple of days. wait for 4 days.
    CALL 4 wait time approx 15 mins - cut off twice - give up for a couple of days to calm down.
    CALL 5 wait time approx 30 mins - ms bozo v. appoligetic but cant do any thing cos their system is down - can i ring back after 48 hrs !!!!????
    CALL 6 wait time unknown - cut off 4 times - deep breaths & count to ten for 24 hrs.
    CALL 7 wait time approx 40 mins - time to get serious - speak to 2 x ms bozos & tell them i wish to speak to supervisor - finally get thro to v. nice v. concerned & v. unhelpful lady - i should take my complaint to my retailer - how will that help me get my h/d !!!!?????? - now she can send me h/d back within days. i tell her to keep h/d & send me back my £400 as ive totally lost confidence in ms & if this is warranty back up god help us all when the warranty runs out. v. nice lady cant authorise refund i ask who can ? apparantly NO ONE. i have to go thro what will be a ” very long process & write with my complaint to ms legal team in washington usa”. - i ask for the phone no. - apparantly THEY DONT HAVE A PHONE NUMBER. i ask for email address- apparantly THEY DONT HAVE EMAIL ADDRESS!!!!!! ( how do the legal team contact the outside world - BLOODY CARRIER PIGEON ??? )

    hey im pissed now! iv had my xbox 360 since december i love it im a total gears of war head, its been working fine until 2 nights ago it froze during an online match, i thought it was my network problem so restarted it and tried with the ethernet cable but still same problem it worked for like 5 mins before freezing on me as i was about to pop sum 1ns head with the sniper, i restarted my xbox again and tried to play offline but again froze 5mins into it, tried a different game and same again!! i love the 360 i would rekemend it to any 1 but i am pissed to the fact i cant play it because of stupid faults!!!! phoned my local game station where i bought it from and he asked do i have a ring round my cd like a burn ring, wich it has- he said its a common fault where the laser burns your dam CD’s, NOT GOOD

    Got mine december ‘06…with 20gb hd. The 1st 360 I had worked about a week before constant crashes/freezes. Got it exchanged- as the popular shop ‘game’ have a no refund policy- even on faulty consoles!
    Let them exchange it, once again- it froze alot, but today it made a noise similur to that of a jigsaw! Thought it was going to blow up! Will be taking this one back now.
    Microsoft offer a crap service- thought that was exclusive to sony! Game only give one year gaurentee- which means in six months time- if the next one I get goes wrong- I will have wasted over £300. Microsoft’s extended warrenty was far too expensive for us- we couldn’t afford it. I just wish now- we had waited for the wii. We bought the 360 for re5- which has been delayed a year! Alan wake, also delayed about 6 months though, alone in the dark also delayed. Can’t play 1st person games, gives me motion sickness- so been enjoying oblivion- but what is the point when the console keeps crashing- even after 30 mins play time- so it’s not due to overheating.
    I don’t want to sound all retro- but life was easier prior to these gens, my ps1 never once crashed- still hasn’t. My n64 is soo old yet works perfectly- my ps2 did pack up once- but after an exchange no troubles, and our xbox 1 was always perfect 100%, wish I hadn’t traded it in for this piece of frack.
    ps3 can kiss my butt, I’m not paying that much for a damned console! already had to buy an hd tv just to play the xbox 360’s small amount of games to the best of their ability.

    @leenardo have you had your medication today? Okay you might have got a bad one but the vast majority of people have no problems with their 360.

    Take it from me - I used to be a total Sony fanboy, I really don’t like Microsoft, I use Linux on my desktop at home and at work but I still love my 360 to bits because it’s great :-)

I had the dreaded three red rings of fire over a month ago - phoned the helpline number - quality service - told exactly what would happen = they’d collect it, repair it send it back - free of charge (even though a few days out of warranty - they’d sort it out), everything happened as they explained - however one slight difference-

    It wasnt fixed - it came back with 4 red lights !!!

    anybody know what can be done ??? - looking for help here

    Ivenho75 - I hope that your story isn’t what we have got instore… our demo Xbox360 here gave up last week … started off with the game freezing and the screen going all fuzzy, then the dreaded 3 red lights. This console is just out of warranty… our other one that we got Dec 2005 is still fine (fingers crossed). Anyway long phone call to the call centre, they will fix it free of charge as if it was still under warranty and send it back to us. Just waiting for the shipping labels to come through. We’ll let you know how it goes.

    Tech lounge - thanks for the reply, there’s a bit a lit at the end of the proverbial tunnel (i hope) i’ve been told that the dreaded 4 lights isnt so dreaded after all (believe it or not) 4 red lights means that there is a connection problem with the power cable that runs into the back of the xbox - not a system error.

    have phoned customer services - who have been as good as gold - said try reconnecting and if still have a problem - they’ll send out a new one - no questions asked - fair play, call center have been good to me.

    watch this space …………………………………….

    Just seen my mates 360, receive the red flashing lights.

    Poor fella, mine still works, but i’m now nervous about mine! I’ve enjoyed the experience, but i think the best solution is to sell and buy a cheap ps2, as this is still a good machine with more than enough games. i will wait for the next console which gains a good reputation!

    Some good news, my mate got the 3 red lights. He phoned Microsoft Support( which is free call) And they came and collected it for free next day, to be repaired also for free! (They said it can take up to 3 weeks for repair)
    He also had no receipt, as they can tell when you purchased it by the serial number on the back of the console. All 360 now have 3yrs free waranty!
