Optimus Keyboard OLED

optimus keyboard For the ultimate gadget to look out for in the Summer of 2006 it has to be the Optimus keyboard, designed by the Art Lebedev Studios in Russia. This is a definate must have.

This keyboard will revolutionise the home and the office as every key is made from a single OLED (organic light-emitting diode). The potential of this keyboard is outstanding. The initial appearance this keyboard is just a standard QWERTY keyboard with a great sleek design, but you can easily change each individual key to display whatever you want, which means that you can change the language character of each key easily making it very versertile. It will be like having a separate tiny monitor for each button.

For gamers this keyboard will mean the end to buying specialised keyboards that have keysets for specific games, This custom keyboard will mean that you will be able to set the keys to what you want them to be, to match your favourite game. This keyboard will be OS-independent and you can use programs like Photoshop to design your own buttons.

We will be finding more out about this keyboard in the months to come and can’t wait to try one out.

Postscript: Possible new release date for the OLED Optimus keyboard.

I have been reading about this Optimus keyboard recently. It is going to be something, like you say, that will revolutionise the way we use a keyboard. I wonder what the actual price will be when it gets launched as at the moment they are mentioning about $200.

With this keyboard still being a prototype I suppose it is hard to say exactly how much it will cost. They have to get it right, but if it goes into mass production the price would come down. Even if the end price was £70-£80 I think people would still pay it to get the technology.

It looks great but probably will only be used by gaming geeks. The rest of us will stick with our normal keyboards.

I’m really torn between waiting for the Optimus or getting a DAS keyboard now. I’m looking for something different that will look cool in my office. I could perhaps start with the DAS and get the Optimus next year

    Hi S.L.
The Optimus keyboard is still planned for release in the Summer of 2006. The price will not be known until nearer the time. Even if it is not available in the UK you could still import one as a keyboard will work anywhere.

Today the Art Lebedev Studios have released the Optimus Mini Three Keyboard which has three OLED’s that can be set up, using the same principle as the full Optimus OLED keyboard. It looks like the full keyboard will be available in late 2006.
