Bafta Video Game Awards 2015 – Destiny wins best game

We are now used to the film industry bringing out new film that may have cost a huge amount of money but now the same can be said for the very realistic video games industry. Here too the cost of producing these picture perfect games can run into many millions of pounds and quite rightly, they are being honoured with awards by the same organisation, the Baftas.

The nominees for the British Academy Games Awards this year includes as we expected titles which include: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Alien: Isolation and Far Cry 4. Naturally these are very realistic and visual, full of technical ambition and also have expansive multi-player options. However what we can see in these nominations is franchises that we are all used to, familiar FIFA football, the Call of Duty first-person shooter and the Forza racer. These are undoubtedly goldmines, but naturally it means also that there is no risk taking in the industry.

Lumino City

We have to say that this may not necessarily be a bad thing because the profits generated also mean that these can be invested into a search for new ideas, this is how the Bungie who created the Halo series went on to create Destiny. This game is undoubtedly a very technical accomplishment and a huge success, but we are now seeing players that are looking for a different kind of challenge and some novelty, even though like the film industry we do enjoy sequels when we look for new games.

Alien Isolation

It is therefore very encouraging to see smaller games from indie developers appearing on the list, which can probably be put down to the huge amount of computing power that we all carry around nowadays, by out mobile phones or tablets. Because the cost for developing games for these platforms is much less, this has opened up the market to smaller studios and small independent developers, these can often just be individuals that enter the market with new games. It is often these small developers that bring real innovation to us on our mobile platforms.

One of the nominations from the smaller developer, State of Play, is Lumino City which demonstrates a new way to approach graphic style. The set is paper based and is perfectly cut and constructed demonstrating an art that many of us could only dream we could accomplish. Another indie game nominated in four categories is 80 Days elegant in its storytelling.

Valiant Hearts

So we can say that large or small the new game Baftas must remind us that we, in this country, have enormous versatility, skills and innovation.
