Expect Shortages on Playstation 3, PS3

There is probably no need to warn you really as it’s something that we have all come to expect from the gaming world when a new console is due to be released, but it is likely that there will be shortages on the new Playstation 3. This comes after the American president of Sony Computer Entertainment, Kaz Hirai was interviewed by Gamespot.
It was explained by Mr Hirai that the PS3 has not started being manufactured yet but they will be starting up the production lines vey shortly. This could potentially send shock waves throughout the industry as panic sets in, but this is what any global manufacturer does when it is releasing a new product. Sony will know exactly how long it takes to make a console to have enough ready to ship.
There will be 2 million PS3 consoles ready for the release date of November 17th, which sounds a huge amount of consoles. But since the PS3 console is being released in 3 territories at the same time it works out to be about 700,000 per territory, (that’s if they share the available quantity equally between Japan, USA and Europe). There will then apparently be another 2 million PS3’s available at the end of 2006. The only way to avoid any sort of shortage is to stock pile the consoles for months in advance which is just not an efficient way to manufacture products.
The release date games list is still being “polished”, so as yet there is still no confirmation of what games will be available. Mr Hirai made it clear that they have a portfolio of games available but they have to work out which games will be best released at launch to give a good balance and which games will be introduced shortly afterwards. Also news on the Online Network Platform, this will go live on launch day and will be available with all of it’s features

First of all i haven’t bothered reading the full story as it will be full off the usual crap Sony tell you, but i expect the reason they haven’t started making the PS3, is because the cell cpu is proving rather hard to manufacture.
The one chip will have 8 “cell” processors of which the Playstation 3 needs 7 fully functioning to work correctly.
If any more die then you can return it IF its under warranty.
