Orange SPV M3100

There has been much talk about the eagerly awaited Orange SPV M3100 Smart Phone. The model is a badged HTC Hermes, now referred to as the HTC TyTN (Titan).
The excellent thing about this phone is that it has a slide out keyboard and also it is WiFi. A truly useful business mobile phone. Since the 2.8″ touch screen can be used horizontally or vertically it is very versatile.
The SPV M3100 has the latest Windows Mobile 5.0 software on it and includes voice calling, voice dialing, handsfree function and blue tooth. It has a good battery life with 5 hours talktime and up to 10 days standby time. The mobile phone has 2 cameras, a 2 mega pixel camera as well as the video camera for the video calling. It has 64Mb of on board memory with a microSD expansion slot giving the opportunity for extra storage.
The dimensions of the SPV M3100 are 112.5 x 58 x 21.95mm and weighs in at 176grams.

Wow I’m really looking forward to getting one of these phones. Love the added feature of the QWERTY keyboard as well as keeping the phone slim. Is it available yet?

The Orange SPV3100 is actually on Orange’s site… appeared a few days ago.
It is available in the Pay Monthly section for £149, but has not yet come onto the upgrade list for people who already have a contract.

I was on the phone to Orange yesterday about upgrading my SPV C550 to the new M3100 and after being on hold for ages, about 20 minutes I was told that it was for new customers only. I have been an Orange customer for about 3 years now and i have found that their customer service has got worse and worse. They really need more call staff, as they are spending a fortune on advertising and not backing it up with support staff.
I think i might just sign up for a new contract online, get the M3100 then cancel my old contract….
and whats all that about cat and dolphin packages I’ve seen on tv recently?? Anyone know??

It is likely that the SPV M3100 will be available in the next few weeks for upgrade customers. They generally do this with all new phone releases, espacially the SPV’s.
As for the new Animal Packages we have just published an article about these called Orange Unlimited Animal Packages. Hope it helps, but we haven’t been impressed by them!
August 9th, 2006 at 4:22 pm
I know exactly where you are coming from with the waiting time trying to get through to speak to someone at Orange. They portray a company that has such good quality service and care for it’s customers so much… well why don’t they pick up the phone?
Anyway I was wanting to find out about the upgrade package for the M3100 and have been told that it will be available shortly…how long that is who knows
August 10th, 2006 at 9:38 am
I have never really had any problems with Orange. I am a business customer and have been on contract for a few years ago. What really tends to annoy me is the flow of calls I get on my mobile from other mobile phone companies, when it’s getting close to my upgrade time. I’d love to know how to keep my details secure so that they can’t cold call me.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:10 pm
I was on to Orange yesterday for 15 mins holding and as an existing customer was told that upgrades are not yet available. I put the phone down and thought what rubbish I’m a customer of 4+ years and that’s not a good reward for customer loyalty.
Rang today and asked to be put through to the retensions department!!Managed to get an upgrade to the SPV M3100 for £69 if I agreed to a new 18 month contract on my exisiting call plan. The phone should be with me tomorrow - Yippeee
August 10th, 2006 at 9:01 pm
Good news folks, I have had my current Orange phone for 10 months but when I just called to upgrade my price plan, the support exec suggested I upgrade my phone as well. I asked about the M3100 and was told it was in stock and available for £99. I was then put through to the “retention team” who offered me the phone for free as long as I went on a £45/month 12 month contract. The phone arrives Monday and my monthly charge has just dropped! Well done Orange support.
I should add though that I use the premium support line (comes with the £5/month insurance) and didn’t have to go through the wretched menu system.
August 10th, 2006 at 9:07 pm
As a high end business user, had a good offer from O2 and went back to Orange retentions dept, got a deal for 2 new SPV3100,4000 minutes cross network, calls between 3 phones on my bill are free,500 texts,25meg data per month all to share between phones plus insurance on the phones for under £130/month.If your contract is up and theres a good deal elsewhere I’ve always found Orange will try to beat it.
August 11th, 2006 at 11:18 am
Hey, it’s great to hear that you guys managed to get the M3100 from Orange.. i’m off to call them now and if I have problems it will definately mean speaking to the retentions department. I don’t mind paying a bit extra for the phone either as it is just what I have been after for a few years now.
August 11th, 2006 at 12:36 pm
I rang up yesterday, wanted a new phone cos my Spv m2000 is dying slowly, they told me my contract hadnt run out, i said i dont care i want a new phone, they mentioned this phone i didnt even know about it. looked at it i said cool. got it for free on current £25 a month contract. I think thy like me because my phonebills are high due to international calling. Phone turned up today…. another happy orange customer.
August 11th, 2006 at 5:11 pm
The sales call issue - I spoke to a network contact of mine and its down to when the number was originally issued by Ofcom - the rogue sales houses then place a rough marker as to when they should call you - hoping they can con you that its really your network calling. I’m waiting for my M3100 next week !! Looks great !!
August 11th, 2006 at 5:49 pm
I have today upgraded to a SPVm3100. I found orange on the telephone totally unhelpful, but found out that although the online team cannot upgrade existing customers to the M3100, if you find am orange shop that has them, then they can upgrade you. Phoned around today, found that the orange shops were starting to get the deliveries this morning, found a shop that was expecting them (in the city) and then sorted out my upgrade ten minutes after they had been delivered. Definitely worth the wait.
August 14th, 2006 at 3:40 am
u sure the SPV M3100 is touch screen as i havnt seen any one else say it is?
August 14th, 2006 at 9:14 am
yep phone is touch screen, i wouldnt have got it other wise!! jocky wheel on the side is very useful to. Finally having a decent size keyboard makes such a difference. i feel sorry for teh suckers who got the spv m5000. it is a monster compared to this one and no real extra functionality.
August 14th, 2006 at 10:12 am
How annoying… after being on hold to Orange for about 40 minutes just now it only turns out that the SPV M3100 would have been available for upgrade but at the moment they don’t have any stock. Perfect!
I was told to try the Orange dealers on the high street as they get priority over the call centres and they may have stock. My nearest Orange dealer is about 15 miles away so going to give then a try.
August 14th, 2006 at 11:14 pm
I just ordered one of these from Orange today. I always go thru to cancellation dept. when I call Orange, they have the most power to make a deal. They gave me the handset for free as an upgrade and I’m now on their Dolphin tariff which is cheaper than I had before.
Hope this helps someone get a better deal. Only drawback is I’m having to wait for the handset, as it was out of stock
August 15th, 2006 at 11:02 am
It’s taken me a day to get hold of a human being on the phone at my local Orange dealer…
They have just received their stock of the SPV M3100 today but they have not been booked onto the system yet. Woohoo I thought… gorgeous stock.
Then I was asked if I was on the waiting list?
Noooooooooo… I just want one now. I’m not a patient person.
Not sure what I’m going to do now, does anyone know how long it will be before Orange call centre get stock?
August 15th, 2006 at 2:47 pm
How cool… the Orange shop called back to say they do have spare stock, so I dashed off to get the upgrade. Spent an hour in the shop waiting for the upgrade to be processed as the “trainer” had to call the dreaded call centre. But I’m really happy that I now have my SPV M3100. It is brilliant and I’m still checking out all of it’s features.
August 16th, 2006 at 10:18 am
I’ve just got off the phone with Orange upgrades. The SPV M3100 are still out of stock and no idea when they will return. My upgrade is one in the Outbound Team’s queue.
For info if you are upgrading to a Racoon deal, at the moment the terms and conditions on the website say you get free Orange Care insurance on a 18 month contract. Orange forgot to remove this offer but will do very soon. After a long ‘chat’ I managed to convince them to honour what they publish!
Look up Racoon terms and conditions on the Help and support section.

Does anybody know whether the Orange animal plans are 3G and GSM? They don’t seem to specify whether any of the data bundles are GPRS or 3G either. Obviously they will be GPRS and GSM out of 3G range but what about in range? How have people found the 3G with this phone if they’ve used it?
August 17th, 2006 at 10:19 am
Just got mine yesterday from my Orange dealer. I too had tried to get one from the Orange call centre but they didn’t have any. I have upgraded from the SPV M600, and the M3100 is the sort of phone that I have been after for ages. I travel a lot on business and having the slide out keyboard on the phone, that is hardly any bigger than the M600, is awesome. I am determined that with this phone I will read the instructions properly so that I use all of it’s features to the max.
August 17th, 2006 at 1:27 pm
Only real disapointments about this phone is for some reason they have taken off MSN which is part of Pocket 5. which is a real pain as i used Messenger on my last phone, phoned orange they didnt know it had been taken off and were surprised it had been, suggested i download from Msn/mobile….. but to my horror they chrage you 10.99 for the download which is an arse seeing as it with other phones its part of the standard software. I paid cos im a mug and i like using messeger to chat to friends. Other niggle is i cant get my orange email to download for the life of me. Got my gmail& hotmail downlaoding fine via pop3…orange mail however…. my phone doesnt want to know about it. Orange were as much use as a chocolate teapot when it came to helping resolve this. so still aint working.
3g is very good, i downloaded 1.5 meg in 20 secs the other day, it is a bit patchy thou and keeps dropping in and out of service. I now want to find someone else with a video phone to see if video function works.
August 22nd, 2006 at 1:24 pm
I just ugraded to them3100. Brilliant phone. Orange did me an upgrade as I have been an orange customer for 12 years and they gave me the upgrade with the free broad band at no cost. I did complain that a new customer seemed to get a better deal than one of long standing. It worked.
August 22nd, 2006 at 6:35 pm
Orange relations (150 & 345) are very bad now, I spent 30 minutes on the phone to 150 to get a phone upgrade registered, they then ask my why I have a SPV M600 on a domestic account, eh Orange sent me that phone for a reason, why ask stupid question to the consumer ?? I then get transferred to upgraded for registration – because of their long queue the call terminates. 30 minutes wasted !!!!!
On my business tariff, I am looking to upgrade to 3100, lets see what they can do.
BTW: I find the M600 lacks the P910 feel, yes I know they are two different phones but just the ways contacts and the interface is laid out – I guess 3100 will be superior.
August 23rd, 2006 at 9:55 am
I have had my SPV M3100 for a week or so now and I can safely say that it is the best business phone I have had to date and I have had a few. The size makes all the difference as it is still easy to fit in your pocket, but the fact that it has Wifi and a built in keyboard means that I can surf the web and keep in touch with the office easily. Brilliant.
August 23rd, 2006 at 11:56 am
Can anyone tell me what the keyboard is like to actually use. It looks quite awesome with a slide out keyboard but is it actually any good to use?
August 24th, 2006 at 11:44 am
I have to agree with Richard on this , im toying between getting the M3100 or p990i.
As far as i can see the only the difference is p990i has a radio, thats it.
The keyboard is a big pulling point for me on M3100 for ease of use on texting and email.
But everyone i know, says to wait for the P990i?
Can anyone shed any light?
August 24th, 2006 at 4:06 pm
Hey, after a week of using my SPV M3100 i have got used to the keyboard. At first i thought is was a bit flimsy but having used it to write emails, text, tasks and set appointments it is great. Can’t see me going back to having a phone without a QWERTY keyboard.
August 24th, 2006 at 4:18 pm
Hi Marvin
Just for you we have done a review on the Sony Ericsson P990i. It’s a tough choice which one to go for but we would still recommend the Orange M3100. This is mainly due to the Windows Mobile 5.0 software, and the fact that the keyboard slides out rather than the P990i where you have to flip down the number pad to get to keyboard which could get in the way.

Anyone had any problems with this phone - I know this isn’t a tech forum, but I have had mine for 8 days, and it hasn’t worked for 7!
Orange are so slow to sort technical problems I was wondering if anyone had any ideas?!
(froze up - which was corrected a hard reset - now won’t pick up a signal. Can’t access ‘phone’ menu via settings, otherwise phone is functioning.)
Many thanks

Hi has any one used this with MS push e-mail from exchange SP2 yet? I got the M600 and that works fine with it, I am getting the M3100 next Tuesday. Can’t wait and hope that works.
I had big problems with the SPV C600 because Orange and Microsoft in their great wisdom locked the phone to only use SSL certificates from published web sites. Bummer as we have 2 of them! I have asked for a regrade to the M3100 that isn’t locked down.
Thanks
Leigh

I notice that someone is concerned about the Pocket MSN (and therefore Messenger) not being available on the 3100. This is true but if you sign up for the beta testing of Windows Live Mobile. This means you download a cab file which includes Windows Live Messenger for Windows Mobile 5.0!
September 4th, 2006 at 6:19 pm
Is this phone easy to use without sliding out the keyboard. Just for making calls, sending texts etc? Or using in the car mounted to a holder?

September 5th, 2006 at 12:00 am
the m3100 is very easy to use with or without the keyboard i ive had one for a few weeks now and its fantastic. Best SPV ever. Chris
September 5th, 2006 at 12:03 am
Orange just upgraded me for free to the m3100 but its out of stock :(, they say within a week. but who knows…..On a £30 tarrif
September 5th, 2006 at 5:24 pm
Robski,
Leave them to call you back when the phone becomes available(took 2 days thats all !), I had an upgrade for free on 500 anytime mins and 1000 texts for £25 incl VAT. Due to be delivered tomorrow ( through retentions Team). It wont be long !
September 6th, 2006 at 10:58 pm
I’ve had my phone for a few weeks now but I have noticed that I’m getting a problem when I try to connect to the internet using the Orange connection not wifi. I go through IE, then Orange World and Orange Finder but each time I try it it says that I am trying to access a page that is only accessible from an Orange phone… thats what I thought I had?
Has anyone got a solution?
Cheers Lucas
September 8th, 2006 at 12:33 pm
Has anyone had any probs with having a memory card in the 3100?? im on my second 3100 now. the phone some times locks and wont turn back on without doing a sort reset. does anyone know of a site that tell me what brand of card are compatible with the 3100.
September 11th, 2006 at 1:29 pm
I went onto the upgrade waiting list for the M3100 on Friday (8th Spet), they aren’t able to tell me how long it will be. Like some of the posts above, I’ve been a customer for 5+ years, and I’m unhappy about this practice of ‘New Customers Only’. Customer retention offered it to me for free which is good, but I’m impatient, the Orange shops don’t answer their phones, not good for a comms company!
September 12th, 2006 at 10:51 pm
week today, still no stock….will give it another week if its not here then. I’ll swap providers
September 17th, 2006 at 3:33 pm
I too wanted to upgrade to the M3100 on Friday, and after a long discussion with Retentions, and speaking to the Manager of the department, they finally mysteriously found me a phone, which is being delivered tomorrow. I’ve been a customer of Orange for 10+ years. I agree that the service is getting worse and worse.
September 19th, 2006 at 10:26 am
Just threatened to go to T-Mobile, and was offered M3100 for free on £25/month tariff and £85 free credit on data. They just need a little push! That said, I do have to wait for more stock, so I may yet move…
September 21st, 2006 at 2:14 pm
Trying to use messenger on my 3100 , downloaded the 2002 and It sync well with the headset. BUT it desnt work!! HAve used skype and everything else with it but no meesenger… any thougts
September 28th, 2006 at 2:03 pm
I am now on my second of these phones and this one is just as bad as the other and I am fed up of waiting hours to get a person on the other end of the line at Orange.
For example if I selected the contacts/add contact/speed dial icon and select speed dial, the menu just closes … the virtual keyboard locks up and as other people have mentioned the unit seems to lock up on a regular basis and requries resetting.
Does anyone know if there is a firmware upgrade or something?
September 28th, 2006 at 9:40 pm
Re: Pocket MSN. DON’T install this on a M3100. It mucks up the software (some of your symptoms above ring bells with what happened to me) and causes the screen to become non touch sensitive.
And guess what…removing the MSN stuff doesn’t cure it, and when you do a hard reset you get asked to tap the screen to continue. Which you can’t.
Slight disapointment not having a messnger client mobile BUT I just love this phone. It’s what I’ve been waiting for since I first started hooking up iPaq’s to HSCSD. Stick with it.

Does anyone know how to copy contacts from P910i to SPVM3100 without having to do it contact by contact ? Have tried everything ! pulling my hair out.
October 5th, 2006 at 7:04 pm
I love the phone but am having trouble will email. I can receiving incoming mail but not send outgoing!!!

can anyone tell me the best way to get satnav on the m3100? The ubiquitous Tot-Tom options look good but are they the best. I would prefer to go for separate bluetooth receiver and software if it makes any difference. Also, any suggestions for a good window mount for this particular smartphone?
October 6th, 2006 at 6:03 pm
Hello William
I nearly went with T-Mobile to get their version of the m3100. T mobile were offerring a co-pilot live bundle (software and bluetooth gps reciever) for around £180. Co-pilot is available for pocket PC if you do a search on the web
October 19th, 2006 at 3:16 pm
I am considering buying this device for when I am travelling in Bulgaria but as I tend to connect to the internet via an ethernet cable, i am wondering if anyone knows if there is an ethernet cable avaiable for it.
October 19th, 2006 at 4:36 pm
Hi,
Does anybody know the processor speed for the M3100? I’ve read that it is only around 300mhz whereas my SPV M2000 is 400mhz. I need to upgrade because I’m having constant trouble with screen alignment with m2000 and Orange don’t know how to fix it (done hard/soft resets and screen aligning within settings menu but just keeps de-callibrating). I don’t want to take a step downwards in terms of speed though. Anybody know how these 2 phones compare?
October 19th, 2006 at 9:16 pm
hi dave its a 400Mhz processor if you goto settings then system then device information then hardware tab it tell you there. Chris

Ive been with Orange for 6 years now and I think I must have the best contract ever. Its a 18 month one I pay £45 per month which includes my insurance. I get 2900 mins any time any network, 200 texts, magic numbers and my answer phone is totally free.
I cant decide if I should get the SPV3100, my Nokia 6233 is giving me problems iam on my 6 handset in 30 days.
October 28th, 2006 at 3:10 pm
William, I have been trying to get a bt700 Bluetooth GPS too link to my 3100, It is not easy and I have still not suceeded. A freind has also tried to no availe ( we are both engineers ( I/T & Electronics). I would advice if you by a bluetooth gps, confirm compatibilty by seeing it work before buying.
If you are to get tom tom, dont forget you will need buy a ‘micro’ sd card too.
Hope this helps.

for the record, the problem stopping me getting sat nav working it that the GPS reciever will not accept the same comms ports as tom tom works with.

Matt, I’m having the same problems with my HOLOX BT-321 receiver. It works with MEMORY-MAP through “COM9″ but this isn’t an option on Tom-Tom. Does any-one have any advice? PLEASE

Hi
I have just received an Orange M3100 and cannot get the pop3 email to work. I have a Orange SPVC500 and email works fine on this.
I have set the settings exactly as the SPVC500 but it will only allow download of pop3 emails, it will not send any.
I have take sim card out of the M3100 and input it into C500 and emails fine bothways.
I have also tried my sim from the C500 in the M3100 but pop3 emails only work incoming, I am unable to send out from this device.
Anyone got any suggestions?
I have even had Orange try using my settings on one of their M3100’s but it only works one way and they are also at a loss.
Any help appreciated.

Hi All, is anyone on there 4th M3100 yet? ive had 4 replacments from 25th of August. 1 just wouldnt turn on from time to time. 2nd Phone stopped working, 3rd the screen went white after major screen alignment issues, 4th Ill let you know.
November 14th, 2006 at 11:17 am
Hey Chris… I’m afraid to say that I’ve had my M3100 since mid August and I’ve not had any problems with it. It has in my opinion been the best SPV i’ve had… and for the past 3/4 years or so it’s all i’ve used.
I hope that No. 4 works out for you.
November 15th, 2006 at 9:33 pm
I’ve had screen alignment issues, its just bieng fixed. It wasnt too much of a problem, but i heard other had had it, so i thought i’d catch it early.
Only problem i’ve had! And that my 1st handset.
Really happy about it.
Tho i might type a bit too fast, sometimes it cant keep up! lol.
November 16th, 2006 at 12:49 pm
I got the M3100 for free and paying £15 a month with Orange. Went straight to ‘disconnection’ team. Gave me the fone, 500min anytime, any network and 250 text all for £15
December 7th, 2006 at 12:32 am
Well im on my 5th M3100 now another screen died on me. although this might be the best spv even its most certanly the worst made. what im concerned about is the warrenty issues with orange. they only replace it for free for the first 6 months so what happens after that is anyones guess.
December 12th, 2006 at 3:51 pm
has anyone actually got any sat nav working on this model of phone???
January 1st, 2007 at 4:31 pm
I’m on my 3rd TyTn (v1605), lol.
1st one, as i said, had Screen Allignment issues.
2nd one was a refurb and had SA issues again, and a broken backlight.
3rd one is new, no SA issues (yet?) but is having a case of black outs after changing screen positions.
This is all a shame, as its such as ace peice of kit! But theres only so many times you can be let down by bugs.
HTC, pull your socks up and do more testing before releasing. And put better quality cameras on. And stop releasing device that are very similar, just small changes, eg tytn and p4350. And try to do slimmer handsets. Then they will be back on form like they were at the begining of 2006.
This tytn is the last one i’m going to have, as i’m losing my confidence when them, which will be a shame if the black outs cause a problem. And due to not seeing any exciting devices due for release in 2007, i may run back to Nokia and get an E50 or E70!
January 16th, 2007 at 11:48 pm
i am using a SPV M1500 at the moment, and yes i’m hooked on the SPV range. my contract was up about a month ago, orange contacted me asking if i wanted to upgrade my phone. as i didn’t know about the 3100 at tha time, and as i had not seen a better phone than i had, i let them talk me in to a 6 month half price deal and now they wont let me up grade to a more expecive plan to get the 3100 for another 4 months. i spend well over £90 a month with orange, and have been with them for years, how crap is that for treatment. i suppose i will just have to be patent.
March 11th, 2007 at 12:38 am
For those looking to get Sat Nav on the M3100, I’m using a bluetooth GPS reciever and Tom Tom Navigator 6 without any problems. Only issue is space for the map files. You will need to add a memory card to your phone. I picked up a 2GB MicroSD thinking I would need lots of space, the maps took up about 250MB so leaving me with plenty of room for other programs.
May 25th, 2007 at 2:33 pm
Looney Pantz - can you advise me how you got your GPS to pair with your M3100? i am having major probs!! i make the connection and it seems that it is connecting then after about 5 seconds the connection drops. what incoming/outgoing com ports are you using? i have a Holox BT-321 GPS receiver. also as soon as the phone sees the receiver it comes up with an Orange exclamation mark. any ideas anyone?

I have TOM TOM 5 on micro sd card, but cant get it to install on my spv3100.
I did have it working, bu after installing latest software, I cant get the programme to work, any ideas????
