China bans VOIP calls for two years

voip skype banned china
It looks like China will not be getting Skype for another couple of years as there will be no licenses issued to enable the computer to telephone service that was due to be launched called SkypeOut. Wang LeiLei, who is the chief exec of an internet portal company called Tom Online has been setting up this service jointly with Skype. But trying to protect its landline phone business for a short while longer China have banned VOIP for until 2008.

We guess that they can’t accept the potential massive hit and the loss of a lot revenue to the telephone companies who are curreently very profitable. This is a massive kick in the teeth for Skype as the Chinese market has huge potential for the growth of Skype due to the size of the technologically minded population. There has also been a rumour that an American company Verso Technologies has sold a Chinese Telecoms company software that will block Skype from being connected.
