microsoft mtv urge It has been announced at the largest gadget show in Las Vegas, the Consumer Electric Show, that we can expect to see a new digital music service that will be strong competition to the iPod and iTunes. Just when you’d thought about getting the MotoRokr with it’s fully integrated iTunes set up, you may have to think again.

The almightly Microsoft have teamed up with MTV to develop URGE. It will be an instant rival to iTunes, boasting up to 2 million tracks backed by the MTV, VH1 and CMT network. It will have the same wide range as iTunes does but the cost of downloading a track will be all important. Unlike iTunes where you have to pay a set price for a download, URGE is likely to run on a subscription basis where you can get unlimited downloads.

The power of Microsoft can only mean that URGE is a great success, and very quickly. URGE will not be compatible with the iPods, which will throw the doors open to other Mp3 player manufacturers now the users will have the choice on the web for downloads. The URGE software will also be included as a standard part of the new Microsoft operating system that is due to be released later on in the year.
